Many people can make short-term sacrifices for long-term gain when they have a self-imposed reward. Therefore, they will exercise self-control to get the reward in the end. On the other hand, use of penalties will discourage bad behaviors; making one develop self-control mechanism. Self-affirmation: This implies avoiding bad habits. One should reaffirm himself or herself on the core things he or she believes are better when done. It will result to self-control.
